Appalachian Artisan Center
www.artisancenter.net
Art of the Mountains is a regional arts council made up of artisans and crafters from eastern Kentucky. Art of the Mountains meets each month on the second Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Perry County Extension Office. Any artist or crafter is welcome to attend and to join. Dues are $5.00 per member annually. In order to participate in Art of the Mountains sponsored sales events, one must be an active member of Art of the Mountains.
Art of the Mountains sponsors Springtime at the Cabin usually held in late April or early May and Christmas at the Cabin in November. These events allow Art of the Mountains members to sell their items. Art of the Mountains also supports Summer in the Park (Hazard) and the Kentucky Appalachian Craft Fair held each year in Somerset the last weekend in June. Members also have art shows throughout the year at the Appalachian Artisan Center in Hindman and at the Perry County Public Library.
A major project that Art of the Mountains is working on now - and planning to finalize - is the Quilt Project. We have approximately 40 4' x 4'quilt blocks that have been painted and are up throughout the region.

Mr. Lawrence O. Davis created a “living memorial” for his son, Bobby Davis, and the other young men from Perry County who lost their lives in World War II. Thus, the Bobby Davis Memorial Park was deeded to the City of Hazard on July 1, 1946. A library also operated on the museum's grounds from 1947 until 1967. In 1983, Mr. Davis began work to establish a museum on the park's site, which was dedicated one year later during the Black Gold Festival. The museum, established in 1983, houses local history exhibits, library and archives containing photographs, historical documents, oral history tapes, artifact collections and a gift shop. A peaceful waterfall, constructed by the City of Hazard, graces the plaza in front of the building. The county 4H council maintains an herb garden in the park, which along with benches and tables contribute to the park's serene atmosphere. The park is open Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:00pm. Admission is free.

Geocaching is a high-tech version of hide-and-seek where you explore the outdoors in search of hidden treasure and adventure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache.
You pronounce it Geo-cashing, like cashing a check. To learn more about geo-cahcing check out this site: http://www.geocaching.com/
Geocaching is deceptively easy. It is one thing to know where a location is shown on a map; it is another to actually try to arrive at that location. Sometimes you cannot navigate directly to a cache by going straight in the direction your GPS receiver points - there might be a river or other obstacle in the way. It is up to you to find the best route to the cache, remembering to respect the environment.
1. If you take something from the cache, leave something of equal or greater value.
2. Write about your find in the cache logbook.
3. Log your experience at www.geocaching.com.
In its simplest form, a cache always contains a logbook. The logbook contains information from the owner of the cache, notes from visitors and can contain much valuable, rewarding, and entertaining information. In smaller caches, a logsheet may be used. Larger caches may contain a logbook and any number of more or less valuable items. These items turn the cache into a true treasure hunt. You never know what the owner or other visitors of the cache may have left there for you to enjoy. Remember, if you take something, it is only fair for you to leave something in return.
People of all ages hide and seek caches, so think carefully before placing an item into a cache. Explosives, ammunition, knives, drugs and alcohol should not be placed in a cache. Respect the local laws. Food items are always a bad idea. Animals have better noses than humans, and in some cases caches have been chewed through and destroyed because of food items in a cache.
